Green was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver A. Green of Royal Oak (Mich.). He attended Interlochen National Music Camp for two years. Green graduated from Royal Oak High School (1937) and Olivet College (1942), where he played in a swing band. In 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Camp Wolters (Tex.), where he was a member of the 2nd Band, I.R.T.C.
